Social capital is one of essential ingredients of urban resilience. But for the citizens, social capital is build within their families and peer groups, and afterwards on a community level. We explored the family resilience and capacities of the families to provide support. Furthermore, we explored social capital in the community and volunteer work during crisis.

From the aspects of urban resilience, these crises gave an incentive for many citizens’ initatives and groups. Volunteer work and solidarity was raised in first response. However, young people witnessed severe reduction of social capital. Families are facing increased challenges and there is inadequate support for the families in the community. Although there were important volunteer initiatives, there is insufficient coordination between mainstream services and volunteer groups.
