The UNIC Pop-up CityLab "integration and cultural diversity", which focused on the issue of racism, brought representatives of the Ruhr University Bochum and the city of Bochum, as the two largest employers in Bochum, into exchange. The discussion was about how to deal with racism within both organizations (e.g. with accusations of racism from employees or applicants) but also accusations of racism from their "customers" i.e. students in the case of RUB, citizens in the case of the city. Likewise, the question of prevention of (systematic) racism in the organizations was addressed.

The composition of the workforce in public institutions still does not reflect the diversity of society. More need to be done to attract non-white people to work in administration, amongst others so that the public can identify with and feel served by staff.. Only a diverse workforce can understand the needs of a diverse population, adapt to them and share the same experiences. In order to achieve this, an evaluation of the target groups could be carried out in order to build on these findings when assebling the staff. In addition, special support programmes could be set up to recruit potential employees and to compensate for inequalities at an early stage.
