Learning from Engaged Research Best Practice Seminar Part II

This ongoing seminar series champions and raises awareness of best practice engaged research exemplars across the UNIC Alliance. This Part II of the series features exemplars from Zagreb, Bochum, Rotterdam and Istanbul. Presentations of the best practice cases will be followed by a panel discussion chaired by Professor Peter Scholten, Alliance Coordinator of the European University of Post-Industrial Cities (UNIC), Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Chairing the event Professor Peter Scholten, Alliance Coordinator of the European University of Post-Industrial Cities (UNIC), Erasmus University Rotterdam will welcome the following presenters in this first of a series of seminars on Learning from Engaged Research Best Practice from the UNIC Engaged Research Strategy Forum:

Valerie Knapp and Vanessa van den Bogaert, research associates at the Chair of Research on Learning and Instruction, Institute for Educational Science, Ruhr University Bochum

‘Citizen Science investigation of Drinking-water of and by the public’

This project sees citizens of Bochum as research partners, examining and measuring water quality at home and in the laboratory. Data collected is entered on the openSenseMap (a platform for open sensor data), made available to researchers, the municipality and the public and can be exchanged and discussed in joint events.

CityLabs Challenge: Green Cities, Sustainability

‘SamenSpraak’

This research initiative explores how individuals with a mental disability can be included in discussions and decision-making processes in their last phase of life. Partners in Ireland, Sweden and France are developing knowledge and courses.

‘Fostering equality in and by academia’

The presentation asks: “how to foster non-discrimination in academic community and by academic community”? A focus on efforts and challenges in implementing wide-scope measures with emphasis on building relevant curricula, transferring necessary legal knowledge towards the citizens, NGO communities and organizing interest groups, capable of advancing their rights and interests and changing institutional culture through self-regulation.

 ‘Participatory Futures for Intercultural Meaningful Social Interactions in Public Places of Istanbul’

This research explores how design and technology can facilitate meaningful social interactions between intercultural strangers in public places of Istanbul as a way of promoting social inclusion and decreasing prejudices in intercultural contexts. Inspired by participatory design and futures studies, the primary goal of the research is to create a framework about Intercultural Meaningful Social Interactions and their characteristics according to participants' experiences and transfer this framework to design tools and technological uses.
