Presenters showcase projects in Cork that are creating a bridge between researchers, policy makers and the community for more a sustainable and inclusive future:

  • Smart Wellbeing project: ‘Wellbeing sensing, social applications of ICT’ (Professor Dirk Pesch, UCC School of Computer Science & IT);
  • Smart Mobility projectCrowd4Access’ (Brendan Smith, EPE from Insight Centre);
  • Smart Environment Project:Biophilic cities: Google Street View imagery and AI measuring urban greenspace and its impact on health and socioeconomics’ (Dr. Marguerite Nyhan, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Engineering, Project PI, The Nyhan Future Sustainability Research Group at UCC);
  • Smart Society. Project: ‘Cork City North-West Regeneration Evaluation Research’ (Dr. Siobhan O’Sullivan and Professor Cathal O’Connell, UCC School of Applied Social Studies).

Cork Smart Gateway is an initiative established by Cork’s local authorities (Cork City and Cork County Council) and Academia partners from UCC, Tyndall National Institute & MTU. Additionally, Industry partners such as Energy Cork, it@Cork and the Cork Chamber of Commerce also contribute to the Cork Smart Gateway activities. Cork Smart Gateway is a UNIC CityLabs partner.

This event featured as part of a UNIC Programme Strand of University College Cork's Community Week - a week long programme of free public and community events that celebrates community engagement with UCC across our campus and beyond.

In 2021 UCC Community Week ran parallel to the first UNIC CityLabs Festival taking place in Liege. The UNIC Programme strand curated a series of events taking place on-site in Cork and on-line shining a light on the University coming together with communities around key CityLabs societal challenges themes.
