Under the title "Smart City Concepts in Oulu & Bochum: Solutions to Pressing Urban Challenges", the RUB Faculty of Economics invited students from the UNIC partner university Oulu to Bochum for five days in September 2023. The students discussed urban challenges, such as climate change, and compared smart city concepts. The summer school aimed to enable students to exchange knowledge across borders, gain hands-on knowledge for their future careers, develop their critical-thinking and to acquire experience in international, interdisciplinary teamwork. Through its workshops, expert discussions and excursions, the Summer School offered an interactive, collaborative learning experience that placed a profound emphasis on engaged research.

Initiators of the Summer School were Prof. Dr. Michael Roos from the Chair of Macroeconomics at Ruhr University Bochum and Prof. Dr. Jaakko Simonen from the Oulu Business School at the University of Oulu. The project was set up in cooperation with the City of Bochum and the City of Oulu.

The Summer School was organized in the framework of the university alliance "European University of Cities in Post-Industrial Transition" (UNIC), amplifying its impact on engaged research. Under the label UNIC4ER, the ten participating universities promote "Engaged Research" in their cities.
