Educational Equity in Academic Education – Hybrid-Hackathon in Bochum

Sustainable teaching has received new attention as a result of the Corona pandemic experience. The topic is linked to various issues related to formats, learning needs, and personal development that students are dealing with in their challenge.

In May 2021, Bochum scientists, citizens and the city administration came together in a pop-up city lab to discuss the question: "How educationally appropriate is Bochum? In the process, a variety of challenges were identified across the different phases of education. In a 30-hour-hackathon-event, a total of 17 of these challenges were prepared and students, as well as other interested parties, were invited to develop initial ideas and concepts for overcoming these challenges.

Challenge: Sustainable teaching has received new attention with the experience of the Corona pandemic. The topic is associated with questions such as: Is it possible to design climate-neutral teaching in view of post-pandemic increases in commuting mobility and resource consumption? In what ways can digital and face-to-face formats be combined in the future? How can university learning become more fair, i.e., what are the needs of an increasingly diverse student body in terms of time-flexible or completely asynchronous events? Which teaching formats can be made permanent with little effort or used for a broader range of participants and adapted to different learning needs? Which job-relevant competencies need to be anchored in teaching in the long term? How can students help constructively shape teaching so that student satisfaction and success increase?

Team of three Students

Team Academic Education worked on ideas on how to address the topic sustainability at universities. They identified three key obstacles on the different levels:

  • University: Low foster for sustainability topics in the university environment
  • Sustainability Departments: More projects and good ideas than capacities
  • Students: No rewards for sustainable engagement Their suggestion is to bring these three aspects together and develop a curricular unit targeting on sustainability by using problem-based learning in real-world labrotaries. Students learn on practical problems teamwork and solution oriented work and their creativity helps to come up with a bunch of ideas on different problems.
