The aim of this UNIC CityLab was to provide the participants with specific recommendations for action to combat racism in institutions and to counteract the possibility of racism occurring, based on the problems and issues identified in the first UNIC CityLab. Besides a panel discussion on the topic of the event, participants could choose between the following workshops
to discuss certain aspects in more depth with the facilitator and other participants.
108 participants including: researchers, students, university staff members and city representatives.
Workshop "Who has the power? Making (white) privilege visible"
To become aware of white privilege, the participants first discussed statements from Peggy McIntosh's "Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack". Based on this discussion, ideas were then collected individually on what changes the participants could imagine at their institutions and these were then clustered. This involved questions on how the visibility of BIPoC could be increased, BIPOC could be specifically promoted (financially and ideationally) and structures could be transformed or racist structures could be dismantled.
