The UNIC Pop-up CityLab "integration and cultural diversity", which focused on the issue of racism, brought representatives of the Ruhr University Bochum and the city of Bochum, as the two largest employers in Bochum, into exchange. The discussion was about how to deal with racism within both organizations (e.g. with accusations of racism from employees or applicants) but also accusations of racism from their "customers" i.e. students in the case of RUB, citizens in the case of the city. Likewise, the question of prevention of (systematic) racism in the organizations was addressed.

Public administrations still do not reflect the diversity of society; in particular the higher up you the hierarchy you go, the less diverse the workforce. The aim of the administration should be to reflect society, as this is the only way to represent the concerns of all citizens. The existence of an awareness of the diversity of the population and the associated experiences of discrimination by citizens is a first step in the right direction. However, the goal must remain that citizens feel represented and welcomed by the administration. To achieve this, multilingual and interculturally trained employees areneeded. This can be achieved, for example, through intercultural training or language courses. In addition, a diversity quota could be introduced, anonymous application procedures could be implemented and the actual application process could be adapted to focus more on life experience and personality and less on origin.
