  • Bilbao: population 347,000. 10% of the population is of foreign nationality; 14.6% of the population is of foreign origin (POE). 31.3% of the POE are nationalised.
  • Higher percentage of population of foreign origin than Bizkaia and the Basque Autonomous Community. The value was somewhat lower than the state average (2020).
  • Main origins: Colombia (14.1%) and Bolivia (8.8%). They are followed by Morocco (8.8%), Nicaragua (6.5%), Venezuela (5.7%) and Romania (4.8%).
  • Area most present: Latin America.
  • Greater concentration in the districts of Errekalde, Ibaiondo and Uribarri.
  • San Francisco and Zabala are the neighbourhoods with the highest concentration of POE (39% and 32%, respectively).
  • The majority of the POE is concentrated in the working ages.
  • Ensures a replacement rate.
  • Relationship observed between economic boom/bust periods and migration flows.

  • The population of foreign origin is not seen as a problem.
  • The impact of the migratory reality in the city is positively valued.
  • The perception of the climate of coexistence and relations in Bilbao's neighbourhoods in 2019 obtained a high pass mark (5.88).
  • The Tolerance Index shows a relevant improvement (56.69% in 2017 and 59.09% in 2019).
  • The City Council's Immigration Policy (II Citizenship and Diversity Plan) is generally unknown to the majority of the autochthonous population, although the degree of awareness of its existence has increased from 9.3% to 27.2%.
